HOWARD JONES

Howard Jones was one of the defining figures of mid-'80s synth-pop. His music merged the technology-intensive sound of new wave with a rare but refreshing positivism, which seems to be a recurring theme in most of his work. Jones racked up a string of hits in the mid- and late '80s and gained super star status at that time with appearances on ‘Live Aid’ and sales of over 8 millions albums world wide . His work has taken on many forms and although known mostly for his ‘electronic’ sound, some of his more recent work displays some different shades and shows him to be a remarkably versatile and mature musician and composer

Working in the Backroom

1993

‘Working in the backroom’ is a collection of songs by Howard Jones which apparently were recorded and produced quickly to preserve the freshness and immediacy of the initial ideas. At that time records were taking months even years to make and many fell foul of the increasing trend toward microscopic editing and attention to detail that was made possible by the growing computer technology of the time. A new kind of challenge was presenting it self . How to keep the soul in computer music. In this respect the challenge was meet with a fresh and increasingly timeless album .

I.G.Y.  Featuring Elliot Randal one of the original Steely Dan guitarists , this cover version of Donald Fagan’s IGY from the hugely influential ‘Night fly’ album is as uplifting and joyous as the original. Strangely authentic and similar in style this takes on the Fagan classic and manages to avoid sounding like a poor imitation and in fact elevates the emotional highs one more notch. Quite a feat indeed.

Angels & Lovers

1997

1997

Angels and Lovers surprises us with a collection of songs with a decidedly acoustic and mellow sound, it shows a different side to Jones’s more familiar electronic work and has a great touch of sensitivity and intimacy to boot . Its a superbly recorded and well crafted record co written and produced by Howard Jones and Andy Ross and helped along no doubt by the involvement of the great Bob Clearmountain who mixed the album in LA.
