FILM :      WELL BEYOND WATER

This is the fist film I have ever made and its worth giving some context. I had just arrived in Australia and was looking for work when a strange offer came my way.  I was commissioned to compose music that might articulate the issue of drought the farmers in NSW where dealing with. I was totally out of my depth and so asked if I could spend time on a sheep farm so I could learn somthing of their world. I happened to take a cheap little camcorder with me so I could document this strange new experience. It wasn't supposed to be a 'proper' film I just wanted a video diary for my self. But gradually I realised that the story I had unwittingly caught on camera would speak more honestly than any music I could compose. If I could piece it together and learn to edit the footage I might able be tell a story that says something about the issues through film. It was an extraordinary experience to make something without setting out to.... A great lesson for me all round and an experience I will never forget. The film has gone on to be used as a show case item for many environmental organisations. Funny thing is I'm not an environmentalist and I know nothing about farming !... one of those moments when you say ' how the hell did this happen!'

This is the trailer for the film.

Well Beyond Water

Portrait Of Ray

Andy Ross

2010

genre - EXPERIMENTAL  CHORAL

Music for choir, solo voice, strings, tuned percussion piano , and computer

In 2009 I met Ray, an 86 year-old cattle farmer living deep in the rural heartlands of New South Wales, Australia. A meeting that was to inspire this instrumental composition which is an attempt at a musical portrait. I always had in mind the ambitious idea that this piece would be performed by a large group of musicians, 100+ ,  including a choir.  I was trying to create an a kind of cinematic soundscape, an atmosphere that was reflective of the delicate inter -connectedness of the natural world and of the world Ray was such a part of. Ray’s spoken voice is superimposed over this in a patchwork of sound bites and anecdotes that build to create an impression of the man and his passion for life.

Microconnect

2007

genre - ELECTRONIC AMBIENT

The   microconnect  project started as a spin off from the ‘Tektonik’ collaboration between Andy Ross and Robbie Bronnimann. The sounds and rhythms here are subtle interlaced and ambiguous. The sound is expansive dramatic and delicate. These works are informed and inspired by a life long interest in the minimalist work of Steve Reich amongst others, and have a cinematic and atmospheric quality that would be well suited to any of the visual arts especially film.

microconnect ‡ LIVE  is a one man live performance which is a kind of  ‘sound sculpture‘  that develops layer by layer,.....more

Angelmoth

2006

genre  -  DANCE BALLET

Original score by : Andy Ross       Dance Company: Ballet Lorent       Venue: Saddlers Wells London

In 2006 I was commissioned to compose music for ‘Angelmoth’, a major ballet production by leading dance troop ‘Ballet Lorent’ starting with a run of London shows at Saddlers Wells Dance Theatre in February 2008.

Following sell out performances in its first season Angelmoth returns to Saddler Wells for a three week run this Christmas.

Angelmoth is the result of a superior collection of collaborators; award winning choreographer Liv Lorent, writer and narrator Ben Crompton, original score composed by Andy Ross, couture designer Paul Shriek, set designer Phil Eddolls, and lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth. Incorporating elements of dance, music, narration, costume and set design all woven around a new fairytale story; Angelmoth delivers a complete theatrical experience.

My documentary about a farmer with an optimistic outlook in the context of drought

Well beyond water is a personal documentary filmed by English composer and musician Andy Ross who finds himself immersed into the unlikely world of Australian sheep farmers who are dealing with a prolonged and difficult drought. Contrary to his expectations he discovers an inspiring farmer who is finding ways to adapt to the challenging climate. The farmer raises questions about the meaning of drought and points to a need for cultural change and adaptive strategies in farming practice
